W&M Construction Builds 50,000 Square Feet For Manhattan Law Firm

January 19, 1998

NEW YORK CITY -- W&M Construction has completed a major 50,000-square-foot installation for King & Spalding, a 111-year-old national law firm, at 1185 Avenue of the Americas here, says Thomas P. Durels, senior vice president of the company.

"This project is among the most complex and challenging W&M Construction has ever done," says Donald Landau, vice president of W&M who oversaw the project. The project required use of specialty finishes and materials of the highest quality, while working against a tight deadline. "It was tough, but very satisfying," Mr. Landau adds.

The work included installation of an extensive supplemental air-conditioning system (particularly vital to the firm's large conference rooms); a new stainless steel railing system for interior stairs; four large private bathrooms; aluminum leaf ceilings at the elevator lobbies; and specialty beech, sycamore and sapele wood paneling. W&M Construction also managed the installation of the telephone and data system, and coordinated with Gensler, the architect, on the installation of a high-tech audio visual system.

"All of us were working towards a common goal," says Don Landau. "We developed a cooperative team approach to problem-solving with King & Spalding and its consultants, which enabled us to successfully complete this project on time. It was a privilege to work with such a discriminating client and with some of the most respected professionals in the business."

The Project Team consisted of Gensler & Associates, the architectural firm; Robert Derector Associates, the consulting engineer; and Bennis and Reissman, the owner's representative.

"Working with W&M Construction and the quality subcontractors it selected was a very positive experience," comments Maddy Burke of Gensler. "All the people involved really wanted the work to do justice to the building itself."

King and Spalding's New York partner-in-charge, James Wildman, praises the work. "The project team hit the move-in target without sacrificing the quality of the installation -- a testament to the teamwork and high standards of W&M and the other team members," he says.

W&M Construction is an affiliate of W&M Properties, the real estate management, marketing and acquisition arm of the Malkin family, which has commercial and residential operations in seven states.
